NHL Roundup : Crowder, Goring Help Bruins End Flyers’ Streak, 6-1

Keith Crowder and Butch Goring each scored two goals Thursday night, and the Boston Bruins snapped Philadelphia’s nine-game unbeaten streak, 6-1, at Boston.

Boston goalie Doug Keans stopped 27 of 28 shots, allowing only Mark Howe’s goal at 12:26 of the second period, a goal that cut Boston’s lead to 3-1.

But Goring scored a short-handed goal, Crowder added a power-play goal and Goring scored again to apply the capper with 4:15 left.

Boston took a 1-0 first-period lead on Charlie Simmer’s 28th goal and increased it to 2-0 at 16:36 on a goal by Rick Middleton. Crowder’s 25th goal of the season gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead at 7:47 of the second period.

Washington 5, N.Y. Rangers 4--The Capitals increased their Patrick Division lead over the Flyers to four points by turning back the Rangers on Mike Gartner’s goal in the third period at New York.

Gartner’s goal, his second of the game and 41st of the season, came at 11:24 on a rebound of his own shot and put Washington ahead, 5-4. New York made it close on Mike Rogers’ goal at 17:39.

Washington scored on three of four power plays after averaging 20% its last 20 attempts.

Capital defenseman Rod Langway was ill and had his 222-game consecutive streak broken.
