A bus carrying about 40 commuters to the Hanford nuclear reservation collided with a gasoline tank truck Friday, injuring 14 people, authorities said.

One of the injured was taken to surgery at Kadlec Medical Center, and several will be admitted, said Kadlec administrator Jon Davis.

The collision occurred at a parking lot where workers board the bus to be transported to jobs around the federal reservation, said Department of Energy spokesman Tom Bauman. The reservation contains facilities for manufacturing, testing and storing nuclear materials, as well as a regional commercial nuclear power plant.

The truck was empty, Bauman said, and there was no fire.

“The bus was pulling out of the lot and was apparently broadsided by the tanker,” Bauman said.

The crash occurred because of a malfunction in a traffic signal, said E. C. Casey, Hanford patrol chief.
