Area Evacuated for Plant Blaze

Fire officials were investigating a chemical fire Monday morning that caused a 1 1/2-hour evacuation of a one-square-block area and about $125,000 in damage to a chrome-plating company in Orange.

The fire at Pamarco Pacific Co. Inc., 1101 W. Struck Ave., started about 6:35 a.m. in a part of the factory where chrome is treated in tanks containing an acid solution and was out 45 minutes later, Fire Capt. Ray Montoya said.

Firefighters dammed up the streets with sand to prevent acid that escaped from the tanks from entering the sewer system, Montoya said. Orange County health officials and the Air Quality Management District supervised the cleanup.
