Navy Delays Plan to Kill Goats

Share

The Navy postponed indefinitely plans to exterminate wild goats on San Clemente Island, where they have threatened the habitats of several endangered plants and animals, a spokesman said today.

An animal rights group, the Fund for Animals, will be allowed to return to the island in July to resume an effort to trap the remaining goats. The group captured 870 of the estimated 1,500 goats in a monthlong netting operation that ended Monday. The rescue program was made possible after Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger personally intervened Jan. 4 to delay the Navy’s plans to destroy the animals.
