Prep Baseball : Sharpnack Strikes Out 18, Fountain Valley Beats Huntington Beach, 3-1

Pitcher Bob Sharpnack of Fountain Valley High School struck out 18 Huntington Beach batters in the Barons’ 3-1 win in the quarterfinals of the Loara Tournament Tuesday at Glover Stadium.

Sharpnack (3-0), who had a perfect game going into the sixth inning, has struck out 32 batters in 14 innings this season.

Catcher Terry Richert led the Fountain Valley attack by going 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs. Fountain Valley (4-1) meets La Quinta Friday in the semifinals. Huntington Beach fell to 2-1.

In other Loara Tournament action:

La Quinta 7, Laguna Hills 1--Jim Ingram and Joey Dunn both went 2 for 3, scored a run and picked up an RBI to lead the Aztecs to a 7-1 win over Laguna Hills (2-2) in quarterfinal action. Steve Hunt (2-0) picked up the win for the Aztecs. La Quinta (3-0) plays Fountain Valley in Friday’s semifinals.

La Habra 6, Servite 5--The Highlanders scored three runs in the second and third innings to eliminate the Friars from the tournament. Steve Shaw got the win for La Habra, which will play Ocean View Thursday.

Magnolia 6, El Dorado 4--John Hangartner’s two-run single in the second inning spurred the Sentinels to the win.

Ocean View 5, Cypress 2--John Savidan tripled in a run and Gerry King had two hits, including a two-run triple, to pace the Seahawks in a consolation round game at Ocean View. Rudy Taub (1-1) picked up the win. Ocean View plays La Habra Thursday with the winner advancing to the consolation bracket championship game.

Los Alamitos 3, Irvine 2--The Griffins scored two runs in the seventh inning to overtake the Vaqueros.

Loara 7, Western 5--The Saxons advanced to the semifinals of their own tournament with the win at Cypress College. Dale Kojac hit a two-run double to lead the Saxons to the quarterfinal victory. Loara (3-0) plays Esperanza on Thursday.

El Toro 9, Troy 6--The Chargers (3-2) won in the consolation bracket at Brookhurst Park. Troy fell to 3-2.

In the El Segundo Tournament:

Simi Valley 9, Edison 2--Mark Miller had two RBIs in a losing cause for the Chargers in a tournament quarterfinal game at Edison Tuesday. Edison hosts Newport Harbor in a Loara Tournament game today at 3 p.m.

In the Santa Ana-Newport-Mesa Tournament:

Newport Harbor 14, Santa Ana Valley 3--Todd Lawrence went 3 for 3 and scored a run to lead the Sailors to the first-round win at Newport Harbor. Jon Dishon picked up the win. Newport Harbor plays Mater Dei Thursday at Tewinkle Park.

Mater Dei 12, Costa Mesa 2--The Monarchs opened their season with an easy first-round win at Costa Mesa. Chris Gill and Tony Follico both went 2 for 4 and Steve Watson struck out nine batters in only four innings to pick up the win.

Saddleback 8, Corona del Mar 1--Despite committing six errors, the Roadrunners came away with an easy first-round win at Corona del Mar. Jeff Rowe pitched a four-hitter, struck out eight and walked one to pick up the win.

Santa Ana 14, Estancia 5--The Saints’ 17-hit attack paced a first-round win at Estancia. Winning pitcher John Shilling went 3 for 3.

In nonleague action:

Aquinas 4, Orange Lutheran 0--The Lancers left 11 men on base in a game at San Bernardino. Orange Lutheran (1-2) plays at Rio Hondo Prep on Friday.
