Irvine Women Reach PCAA Title Game

Senior guard Vickie Simpson and junior center Cheri Graham combined for 30 points to lead UC Irvine to a 64-41 victory over UC Santa Barbara in the semifinals of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s basketball tournament Saturday night at Crawford Hall.

Irvine (21-6) will meet Nevada Las Vegas (25-4), a 68-49 winner over Hawaii in the other semifinal game, for the tournament championship today at 2.

Irvine trailed by eight points midway through the first half but rallied to take a 32-22, halftime lead. Santa Barbara (12-16) did not have a player score in double figures.

In other women’s college action:

Cal State Long Beach 96, Cal State Fullerton 69--Kirsten Cummings had a game-high 25 points and Cindy Brown had 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the 49ers to the win in the Western Collegiate Athletic Assn. finale at Long Beach. Linzi Phillips had 24 points and 9 rebounds for Fullerton (8-6, 17-10).

The Titans have an outside chance of receiving a bid to play in the women’s National Invitational Tournament. Long Beach, ranked No. 3 in the nation, concludes the regular season at 26-2, 13-1 in conference play.

Cal Poly Pomona 79, San Francisco State 39--Senior forward Sheri Jennum has 13 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists to lead Pomona to the win in the NCAA Division 2 Western Regional game in Pomona’s Kellogg Gym.

The Broncos will meet Chapman College Tuesday night at 7:30 in Hutton Sports Center for the right to advance in the NCAA Div. 2 tournament.
