Preps SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Cyndi Smith Pitches Hart High to 2 Victories

Cyndi Smith of Hart High pitched 14 innings and won both ends of the double-header as her team swept Bishop Amat, 11-0 and 4-2, Thursday.

Smith, whose record is 5-0 this season, pitched a three-hitter in the first game and allowed five hits in the second.

Lorie Fausset was the batting star for the Indians, who are 8-0. She was 3 for 3 in the first game with a home run and three RBIs and drove in another run in the second game with a single. Hart came from behind to win the second. Trailing 2-1, Hart rallied for three runs in the fifth behind Fausset and Natalie Davidson’s two-run double.

Sylmar 8, North Hollywood 0

Sylmar’s Diana Lopez pitched a one-hitter as the Spartans defeated North Hollywood. Lopez, a senior, also struck out 12 batters as Sylmar improved its record to 2-0.

Viewpoint 5, L.A. Baptist 2

Raising her season strikeout mark to 35, Roxana Rafik pitched Viewpoint High to its third victory.

Rafik picked up nine strikeouts while recording her third victory of the season. Rafik, who hasn’t lost, had 16 strikeouts in the season’s first game.

Battery mate Jaimie Berkman paced the hitting with a double for two RBIs. Liesl Dano also had two RBIs for Hart.

BASEBALL

Grant 10, Poly 4

Grant High improved its record to 4-0 in the East Valley League as John Hauptman led the way. He had two RBIs in a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Brian Yamasawa won his second game.

Sylmar 19, Hollywood 2

Rickie Diaz’s five RBIs led Sylmar’s romp, also in the East Valley League. He had a double and two singles as Sylmar improved its record to 3-1. Isidro Rodriguez had three hits, including a triple, and four RBIs for the Spartans.

TRACK

Saugus 78, Hart 58

Rodney Bradshaw won three events in Saugus’ win. He ran the 120-yard high hurdles in 14.7 seconds, won the 330-yard intermediate hurdles in 40.0 and topped the day with a leap of 20 feet, 7 inches in the long jump.

Dave Stonerock of Saugus was a double winner in the distance events. He won the mile in 4:32 and the two mile in 9:49.

Notre Dame 84, Loyola 43

Joey Duarte of Notre Dame won three events as the Knights beat last year’s Southern Section 4-A champions. Notre Dame is now 3-0.

Duarte won the 120-yard high hurdles in 14.5, the 330 intermediates in 39.4 and the 220 in 22.7.

Notre Dame has three top pole vaulters this season. Mark Walsh won the event at 13-6 with John Rivera and sophomore Jeff Lamonica each clearing 13 feet even.

Carpinteria 83, Oak Park 36

Oak Park’s John Knight had an impressive double. He had a 56-foot, 4 3/4-inch mark in the shot put and a 162-foot, 3-inch toss in the discus. His discus throw was the best in the Valley this season.
