NBA Roundup : Wilkins Powers Atlanta Over Warriors, 120-112

Dominique Wilkins scored 29 points to lead the injury-hampered Atlanta Hawks to a 120-112 victory over the Golden State Warriors Thursday night at Oakland.

The Hawks started the game with only nine healthy players and lost starting forward Antoine Carr with an ankle sprain in the first six minutes of the game.

Randy Wittman scored 24 points and backcourt mate Eddie Johnson added 15 to back up Wilkins and lift the Hawks.

Golden State was led by Purvis Short’s game-high 34 points.

Atlanta dominated the boards, outrebounding the Warriors, 66-52.

The Hawks led, 60-55, at the half and Golden State never managed to catch up.

San Antonio 100, Seattle 93--Forward Mike Mitchell scored 19 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Spurs turned back the SuperSonics at Seattle.

The victory snapped San Antonio’s four-game losing streak.

Mitchell sank seven of nine shots from the field and all five free throws as he dominated the final period. The Spurs never trailed in the final quarter.

San Antonio played exceptionally good inside defense and forced Seattle to miss from the outside. Mitchell scored nine points in the final 3:42 as the Spurs pulled away.

Forward Tom Chambers and guard Al Wood topped the Sonics with 19 points each.

San Antonio took an early five-point lead, but neither team was able to lead by more than six until the Spurs’ final surge.

New York 106, Chicago 97--Bernard King scored 24 points and Darrell Walker added 22 points to lead the Knicks to victory over the Bulls at New York.

For the Bulls, the loss was the 14th in their last 15 road games.

The Knicks, hit by injuries all season, played without center Pat Cummings and guard Rory Sparrow. Cummings sat out with a sore right ankle and Sparrow is suffering from muscle spasms in his neck.

The Knicks received a big lift from James Bailey, who filled at center and scored 14 points.
