Aftershock of Quake Rocks Chilean Coast
Chileans dashed from their homes early Tuesday in response to a violent tremor, the worst of more than 300 aftershocks since a devastating earthquake two weeks ago that killed more than 140 people.
There was no immediate report of casualties or damage, but radio reports said the shock was felt for 700 miles up and down the Chilean coast and as far west as Easter Island, a Chilean territory more than 1,800 miles offshore.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu measured the temblor at 6.7 on the Richter scale and placed its epicenter 240 miles northeast of Santiago in the mountains of Argentina. The March 3 quake registered 7.4.
