Padres Fans Really Relish Those Mustard and Ketchup Uniforms

Share

Those mustard and ketchup Padre uniforms that have been subjected to so much ridicule are in demand.

“We’ve gotten hundreds of letters from people who want one of the old uniforms,” said Ray Peralta, the equipment manager. “I thought no one liked them.”

However, they were the uniforms the Padres wore in the National League Championship Series and the World Series last fall. Baseball buffs are notorious hunters of such souvenirs.

The players who wore them will have first call when they are discontinued after spring training. Peralta said each player who played in the World Series--and everyone played--will get to keep one uniform.

Peralta does not know yet what will happen to the others.

“I send all the letters upstairs,” he said. “That’s what I did a few years ago when Randy Jones won the Cy Young Award. I got a letter with a check for $600 in my name. The guy wanted Randy Jones’ uniform.”

Peralta laughed.

“It just goes to show that it’s not the uniform,” he said. “It’s what’s in ‘em.”
