USIU Sweeps Doubleheader at Chapman

United States International University (10-14), led by the hitting of Phil Zimmerman, swept a nonconference doubleheader, 10-6 and 5-4, from Chapman (13-10) Friday at Orange.

In the first game, Zimmerman went 3 for 5 with a home run and double to help Jay Martel, who allowed no earned runs, get the win. Martel struck out four and survived the three errors committed by his teammates that led to Chapman’s six runs. Scott Stoerck, who last only 1 innings, was the losing pitcher.

In the nightcap, Zimmerman went 2 for 3 with another home run as the Gulls built a 5-0 lead after three innings and held on to win. Frank Grove went all the way, striking out nine, to get the win for USIU. Steve Dunne took the loss for Chapman.
