College Baseball : Turner Drives In Five to Lead Fullerton

Shortstop Shane Turner drove in three runs in the opener and two runs in the nightcap Friday to lead Cal State Fullerton to an 8-2, 4-0 doubleheader sweep of the University of the Pacific on Titan Field.

The victories improved the Titans’ Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. record to 8-3 and overall record to 17-16-1. The Tigers are 2-7 and 9-19.

In the first game, Turner, who has hit in 18 straight games, went 4 for 5 with a double. In the second game, he had a two-run single to cap a four-run second inning.

Doug Robertson (1-2), making his first start of the season, went eight innings to get the win in the first game. The junior right-hander, who is bidding to become a permanent member of the Titans’ starting rotation, struck out eight and walked one.

Mike Belanger (6-1) combined with Mike Schooler to shut out Pacific in the nightcap. Belanger worked eight innings and allowed only three hits while striking out four and walking two.

The only home run of the day was by Fullerton’s Keith Watkins, who hit his fourth of the year in the second game.

Fullerton, off to its worst start since 1973 but now over the .500 mark for the first time this season since being 1-0, plays the Angels in a pair of exhibition games this weekend at Palm Springs. Both today’s and Sunday’s games start at 1 p.m.

In other collegiate baseball action:

United States International 10-5, Chapman 6-4--The Gulls (10-14), led by the hitting of Phil Zimmerman, swept a nonconference doubleheader from the Panthers (13-10) at Hart Park in Orange.

In the first game, Zimmerman went 3 for 5 with a home run and double to help Jay Martel, who allowed no earned runs, get the win. Martel struck out four and survived the three errors committed by his teammates that led to Chapman’s six runs. Scott Stoerck, who last only 1 innings, was the losing pitcher.

In the nightcap, Zimmerman went 2 for 3 with another home run as the Gulls built a 5-0 lead after three innings and held on to win. Frank Grove went all the way, striking out nine, to get the win for USIU. Steve Dunne took the loss for Chapman.
