College Softball : Fullerton Reaches Softball Final

Cal State Fullerton’s run in the fourth inning was enough for a 1-0 victory Saturday over Cal Poly Pomona to move into today’s final of the PONY Invitational Softball Tournament at Fullerton.

Leslie King singled to lead off the fourth for the Titans, who are the tournament’s top seed and ranked second in the nation and the tournament’s top seed. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joann Ferrieri. Lisa Baker then singled. Terri Oberg singled to score King.

Titan pitcher Susan LeFebvre (11-2) allowed three hits and struck out five to get the victory. Pomona’s Rhonda Wheatley was the losing pitcher. Wheatley, who pitched a no-hitter Friday against Oklahoma, allowed only five hits and had seven strikeouts.

Today, Pomona will play the champion of the loser bracket to determine which team will play Fullerton in the final.

In quarterfinal games:

Cal Poly Pomona beat Northwestern, 5-2; Cal State Fullerton beat Nebraska, 6-0.

In loser bracket games:

Pacific beat Cal, 2-1; Oklahoma beat Arizona State, 3-2; Fresno State beat Utah, 1-0; U.S. International beat Utah State, 2-0; Fresno State beat USIU, 3-0; and Pacific beat Oklahoma, 2-0.
