Prep Baseball : Katella Pounds Out 18 Hits in 14-3 Victory Over Loara

Katella High School pounded Loara pitching for 18 hits Tuesday and the Knights routed the host Saxons, 14-3, in an Empire League game at Loara.

First-place Katella (3-0) was led by Mike Connoly, who went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs. Dave Lewis added two hits and two RBIs and Jon Paboogian had four hits and an RBI. Carlos Vargas led Loara (1-2) with a three-run home run.

Jerry George went all the way and got the win for the Knights and Tim Hopper, who earlier this season pitched a no-hitter against Esperanza, took the loss.

In other Empire League action:

Esperanza 3, El Dorado 0--The Aztecs scored three unearned runs and beat the Golden Hawks at Placentia. David Salcido went the distance and got the win. Jeff Petredes also went the distance took the loss.

Esperanza scored a run on a passed ball in the first inning and then scored twice in the fifth with the help of two El Dorado errors. The Golden Hawks scored their only run in the seventh on Brett Boone’s home run.

Los Alamitos 14, Kennedy 5--The Griffins (2-1) had three, three-run innings and easily beat the host Irish (0-3) at Brookhurst Park at Anaheim. Gary Renko (3 for 4 with three runs scored), J.T. Snow (3 for 5 with three RBIs) and Ricky Nen (a double, home run, three RBIs and three runs scored) led Los Alamitos. Brooks Peters went four innings to get the win and improve his record to 2-1.

Cypress 10, Pacifica 2--Kevin Harper went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the host Centurions (2-1) to an upset win over the Mariners (2-1) at Cypress.

Al Agurrie also homered for Cypress, and Jeff Butler was 2 for 3 with a double and and RBI. Brian Coriell went six innings to get the win for Cypress and Chris Kanalson, didn’t last through the first inning, took the defeat.

ACADEMY LEAGUE

Leffingwell Christian 8, Newport Christian 2--Randy Wellen pitched a complete game, struck out 12 and allowed only two hits to lead the Lions (2-0) over the Conquerors (0-3).

CENTURY LEAGUE

Villa Park 4, Foothill 3 (eight innings)--Brian Maida’s two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Spartans (2-0-1) past the Knights (0-3) at Villa Park. Foothill had scored a run in the top of the eighth on a single, stolen base, passed ball and bloop single. On the day, Maida had two hits and three RBIs. Brian Sheridan went all the way to get the win for Villa Park and gave up eight hits.

Orange 4, El Modena 3--The Panthers (2-1) scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to beat the Vanguards (1-1-1) at El Modena. Jamie Bosley was hit by a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded and two outs to tie the score at 2-2 and then John Cole put Orange ahead with a single.

Paul Renner worked six inning to get the win for the Panthers and Tad Myer pitched a scoreless ninth to get a save. Cole led the Orange attack by going 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Santa Ana 7, Santa Valley 1--Juan Moran’s three-run home run led the first-place Saints (3-0, 8-1) over the Falcons (1-2, 1-7) at Santa Ana. Moran was 2 for 3 and teammate Hector Olivares was 2 for 4. John Torres (3-1) went five innings to get the win for Santa Ana, which has won six straight.

Tustin 3, Canyon 3 (nine-inning tie)--The host Comanches (1-1-1, 7-1-1) rallied from one-run deficits three times, the latest coming in the bottom of the eighth inning, to get a tie with the Tillers (0-2-1, 6-3) at Anaheim Hills. Canyon was behind, 3-2, in the eighth when Eric DeGraw walked and came all the way around to score from first base on Steve Milledge’s hit-and-run single. Milledge led the Canyon offense by going 3 for 4 and Dave Staton went 3 for 4 for Tustin.

OLYMPIC LEAGUE

Valley Christina 3, Orange Lutheran 2--Valley Christian (2-2) scored a run in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 and beat Orange Lutheran (2-1), which committed five errors.

Capistrano Valley Christian 5, Ontario Christian 2--Peter Gervais pitched six strong innings to improve his record to 4-1 as the Eagles (2-1, 6-2) beat the Knights (1-2, 2-5) at Ontario.

SEA VIEW LEAGUE

Estancia 7, Newport Harbor 3--Matt Hatfield struck out 13 and allowed only one hit to lead the Eagles (2-1) past the Sailors (2-1) at Estancia. Joey James got Newport Harbor’s hit--a two-run homer--in the first inning and from that point on Hatfield was overpowering. The Sailors other run, which came in the fifth inning, was unearned. Estancia got seven hits off losing pitcher Jon Dishon.

University 12, Corona del Mar 5--The Trojans (2-1) collected 15 hits and beat the Sea Kings (0-3) in Irvine. University’s Todd Krueger, who was also the winning pitcher, went 4 for 4 with four runs scored and two RBIs. Teammate Gene Artiano was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and Steve Conner went 3 for 3 with a home run.

Laguna Beach 5, Saddleback 2 --Rex Reasor was 2 for 3 and hit a home run in the third to lead the Artists (1-2, 1-8) over the Roadrunners (1-2, 2-8). Winning pitcher Coby Naess struck out six and had no walks. He gave up five hits.

Costa Mesa 8, Woodbridge 0--David Austin pitched a three-hitter over seven innings and struck out four and walked none to lead the Mustangs (3-0, 4-6). Only one Woodbridge batter reached second base. Mike Salladay, Tom Kaiser and Rick Wanne each had two hits to lead Costa Mesa. Brent Mayne had a two-run homer in the third.

SUNSET LEAGUE

Edison 11, Fountain Valley 6--The Barons (3-1) took a 5-0 first-inning lead by couldn’t hold it as the Chargers (3-1) rallied to win the night game at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

Edison had only six hits, but took advantage of 10 walks by Fountain Valley pitching and three errors by the Barons’ defense to rally and defeat ace pitcher Bob Sharpnack. Sharpnack last five innings and gave up six walks and all six Edison hits. Chip Damato went the distance for Edison, allowed seven hits, and got the win.

Jim Wayne hit a grand slam in the first to help Fountain Valley off to a good start. Greg Martain led Edison by going 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Huntington Beach 1, Ocean View 0--Junior left-hander Jeff Hawk struck out six and allowed two hits to improve his record to 4-0 as the Oilers (2-2, 7-5) beat the Seahawks (1-3, 7-4) at Ocean View. Huntington Beach scored the only run of the game on Darrin Tomasick’s RBI single.

Marina 6, Westminster 2--David Emmons pitched a complete game to lead the Vikings (3-1) past the Lions (0-3-1) at Westminster. James Buccheri led Marina by going 2 for 4 and Keith Laszlo had two RBIs. Steve Gulley hit a two-run home run for Westminster.
