College Baseball : Irvine Strands 14 Runners in 10-Inning Loss

UC Irvine left 14 runners on base Tuesday afternoon and went on to lose to Pepperdine in 10 innings, 10-7, in a nonconference game at Anteater Stadium.

The Anteaters (14-12-1) trailed the seventh-ranked Waves (23-6-1), 7-5, going into the bottom of the ninth inning when they scored two runs on Steve Morgan’s double. Winning pitcher Mike Fetters, who had already walked two batters in the inning, then walked two more to load the bases but the inning ended when Mike Sugar hit into a force play.

Pepperdine scored three times in the 10th off losing pitcher Lanny DeRose to take a 10-7 lead. Nezi Ballelo tripled home Andy Stankiewicz, Steve Erickson singled home Ballelo and Erickson later scored on a fielder’s choice.

Irvine loaded the bases on two singles and Fetters’ fifth and final walk in the 10th, but retired Morgan to end the game.

Doug Irvine went 4 for 6 and scored twice to lead Irvine, while teammate Tom Baine was 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Ballelo led the Waves by going 3 for 6 with a home run, triple, two RBIs and three runs scored. Erickson was 3 for 6 with two RBIs.

Dominguez Hills 3, Chapman 0--Jim Pena allowed three hits and struck out seven at Dominguez Hills to lead the Toros past the Panthers (3-3, 13-11). Dennis McCartney led Dominguez Hills’ offense by going 3 for 3 with a double and one RBI. Mike Lomeli, who allowed all three Toro runs in his 8 innings of work, took the loss.
