An unemployed gardener was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of felony arson in connection with the March 16 firebombing of an abortion clinic.

Shane Cameron, 25, was arrested near the home he shares with his parents, less than three blocks from the Birth Control Institute, where the bombing occurred. San Diego Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Sewell said Cameron, who is not believed to be associated with anti-abortion activists that have regularly picketed the clinic over the last year, is also a suspect in the torchings of two motorcycles in the East San Diego area.

Arson investigators said they had been suspicious of Cameron since the night of the bombing, when a police officer noticed him loitering near the clinic, Sewell said. Investigators believe that at least two people were involved in the bombing, in which a Molotov cocktail was thrown into the clinic by the passenger of a pickup truck.

The bombing, which caused more than $10,000 damage, was the clinic’s second in the last seven months, and the 33rd such attack nationwide over the last two years.
