Prep Baseball : Mater Dei Pounds Pius X to Improve Record to 11-0

Mater Dei High School remained undefeated in both overall and Angelus League baseball play with an 11-0 rout of Pius X at Mater Dei Saturday behind Mike McCarthy’s two-hitter.

McCarthy (2-0) held the Warriors to two singles and struck out nine batters in seven innings.

Bob DeJardin went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, and Chris Gill went 2 for 4 to lead the Monarch offense.

With the win, the Monarchs raised their league record to 5-0 and their overall record to 11-0. Pius X fell to 0-5 in league.

In the Santa Ana Elks Tournament:

Foothill 15, Garden Grove 11--The Knights scored seven times in the bottom of the first inning to pull away from the Argonauts in this first-round game at Hart Park.

Chris Cutliff led the Knight attack by going 3 for 3 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Stacy Parker picked up the win for the Knights. Foothill meets Villa Park at noon Monday at Hart Park.

Los Alamitos 7, Santa Ana Valley 4--Gary Renko went 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Griffins to the victory at Santa Ana Valley. John Jacobs (3-0) picked up the win.

Los Alamitos (12-2) meets Long Beach Millikan at noon Monday at Santa Ana College.

Katella 5, Banning 4--Mike Slagle singled in Darren O’Kuda with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to secure the Knights’ win at Saddleback. Jerry George went all the way to pick up the victory for Katella.

The Knights advance to meet Mission Viejo Monday at noon in a second-round game at Saddleback.

Mission Viejo 22, Saddleback 6--The Diablos sent 19 men to the plate and scored 14 runs in the third inning to lead the lopsided win. Bob Brucato hit a two-run homer during that third-inning scoring barrage.

The Diablos meet Katella Monday at noon in a second-round game at Saddleback. The Roadrunners move on to meet Banning in a consolation bracket game Monday at 9:30 a.m. at Saddleback.

Long Beach Millikan 9, Orange 0--Starting pitcher Steve Holliday threw six shutout innings en route to this first-round win at Santa Ana Valley.

Millikan advances to meet Los Alamitos at noon on Monday at Santa Ana College. Orange meets Santa Ana Valley in a consolation bracket game at Santa Ana College Monday at 9:30 a.m.

Villa Park 7, El Toro 6--The Spartans scored five runs in the last inning to come from behind for the victory at Hart Park. Reliever Jeff Williams picked up the win.

Villa Park advances to meet Foothill at noon Monday at Hart Park. El Toro plays Garden Grove in a consolation game at 9:30 a.m.

Irvine 15, Santa Ana 11--The Vaqueros scored nine runs in the second inning and held off a Santa Ana (11-2) rally to win in a first round game at Santa Ana.

Corona 12, El Modena 1--Starter Skeet Pope threw a one-hitter over 4 innings, and Panther pitchers went on to allow only two hits all afternoon in the rout. El Modena moves on to meet Santa Ana Monday at 9:30 a.m. at Santa Ana.

In the Anaheim Lions Tournament:

Riordan 9, Woodbridge 2--The visitors from San Francisco scored six runs in the first inning to pull away from the Warriors in a first-round game at Glover Stadium. Mike Ecklund and Ryan Bettencourt knocked in the Warriors’ runs.

Woodbridge (5-5) moves on to play Montebello in the consolation round Monday at 10 a.m., and Riordan advances to play Long Beach Poly in the championship round at 4 p.m.

Fullerton 5, Canyon 2--Jeff Middlebrooks pitched a complete game as the Indians (5-5) beat the Comanches (8-2-1) at Glover Stadium.

In Sunset League play:

Westminster 5, Ocean View 1--Sophomore pitcher John Gonzalez came on in relief in the fourth inning and struck out five, walked two and allowed only two hits the rest of the way to pick up the win.

Steve Gulley, batting .645, had two more hits, going 2 for 3 with one RBI to pace the Lion attack. Westminster is 4-7-1 overall and 1-3-1 in league. Ocean View fell to 8-6 and 1-4.
