Boston University has decided to pay the rent of four or five talented artists after they graduate to help them start their careers.

Under the program, a $1-million gift will be used to provide grants ranging from $10,000 to $12,500 to four or five students who complete undergraduate or graduate programs at the school. The school hopes the grants will free the blossoming artists to concentrate on their careers.

“A great many opportunities are postponed and lost altogether” in that first year, said Phyllis Curtin, dean of the School for the Arts. “Every artist needs time to be free from necessary occupations.”

At a campus luncheon, Hugh Southern of the National Endowment for the Arts read a letter from President Reagan praising the school for its efforts to involve the private sector in the post-education project.

Grants from the Esther B. Kahn and Albert S. Kahn Career Entry Scholarship Fund will be awarded to students of music, theater arts and visual arts.
