Daley Thompson Moves to Top of the Decathlon List

LOS ALTOS, Calif. — The International Amateur Athletic Federation has restructured point values of the decathlon, throwing into controversy the world record currently held by West Germany’s Jurgen Hingsen, Track and Field News reported Thursday.
The newspaper reported in its April issue that the IAAF has decided to lower the point values associated with the pole vault and to increase the point values of the 1,500 meters and long jump.
The top five all-time performances, with new point totals, old point totals and changes in points:
1. Daley Thompson, Great Britain, 8,846 from 8,797, plus 49.
2. Jurgen Hingsen, West Germany, 8,832 from 8,798, plus 34.
3. Uwe Freimuth, East Germany, 8,793 from 8,704, plus 89.
4. Siegfried Wentz, West Germany, 8,762 from 8,718, plus 44.
5. Aleksandra Apaychev, USSR, 8,705 from 8,643, plus 62.
