Bus Driver in Fatal Crash Failed to Heed Signs, Panel Says
A church bus went out of control while descending a steep grade on a California highway last summer, after the driver failed to respond to sign warnings, federal officials concluded Friday.
The National Transportation Safety Board said the driver’s failure to respond to the warning signs was coupled with a failure to properly use the vehicle’s transmission and service brakes.
The board said the bus, owned by the California Yearly Meeting of Friends Church, left State Route 155 when it failed to negotiate a curve and rolled 28 feet down an embankment new Wofford Heights on July 7.
The panel also said two of the four service brakes on the bus were improperly adjusted.
