Elton John’s Bath Leaves Hotel Awash

British pop star Elton John has checked out of the luxurious Savoy Hotel here, leaving behind a soggy memento of his stay--extensive damage caused by overflowing water from his bathtub.

“He just forgot the water was running,” a hotel spokeswoman said. “He ran his bath and then went to telephone his wife in New York. It flooded his entire suite and dripped into the suite below and the suite below that.”

The spokeswoman refused to give an estimate on how much it would cost to repair the damage “until we have time to see it all.” But a London radio station estimated it ran into thousands of dollars.

“He said he was sorry,” the spokeswoman said, adding the millionaire pop star offered to pay for the damage. She refused to say whether the hotel, one of London’s best, would take him up on the offer.
