San Diego Prep Baseball : Hansel Leads Granite Hills to 13-3 Win

Granite Hills’ catcher Damon Hansel hit for the cycle, going 4 for 5 with six RBIs, as the Eagles defeated El Cajon, 13-3, in Grossmont League action Friday.

Hansel drove in three runs with a homer and three more with a bases-loaded triple.

Dan Nerat won his second game in three decisions for Grossmont (3-1 in league and 11-3 overall). Tim Bryant homered for El Cajon (1-4 and 2-9).

In other Grossmont League games:

Santana 8, El Capitan 5--At Lakeside, No. 3-ranked Santana rallied to score four runs in the fourth inning and overtake the Vaqueros. Scott Papillon’s two-run single was the key hit in the inning. Jim Franco hit a two-run homer in the first for the Sultans (4-0, 11-3). Dave Nowlan hit a solo homer for El Capitan in the third, and his brother, Steve, followed with a three-run homer in the same inning. Mike Hook (3-1) was the winner for the Sultans.

Valhalla 15, Monte Vista 4--The Norsemen (3-1, 11-2) pounded out 19 hits against the Monarchs. Doug Grissen and Robbie Sharp drove in three runs apiece. Steve Phoenix (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Valhalla.

WESTERN LEAGUE University City 4, University 0--A seven-hit shutout by right-hander Eric Bridge gave the Centurions a win in their league opener. University is 0-1, 9-6.

Kearny 6, La Jolla 5--The Komets (1-0, 8-5) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Vikings at Kearny.

CENTRAL LEAGUE Crawford 17, Hoover 7--The Colts scored seven runs in the first inning and five in the seventh against the Cardinals. Todd Armer had two hits and three RBIs, Jack Palestini had two hits and two RBIs, and Rick Anderson and Jim Hemphill had three hits and two RBIs apiece. John Wilson also hit a two-run home run for Crawford. The Colts are 1-0, 5-9. Hoover is 0-1, 6-7.

St. Augustine 9, San Diego 7--The Saints (1-0, 1-13) got their first win of the year, thanks to three hits apiece by Nate Thernes and Steve Early. Thernes had three RBIs and Early two. Richard Lozano was the winner for St. Augustine. Justin Howard hit a two-run homer for San Diego (0-1, 4-10).

Christian 7, Lincoln 5--Joel Waymire drove in two runs to lead the Patriots (1-0, 7-6) over the Hornets (0-1, 8-4-1).

EASTERN LEAGUE Patrick Henry 6, Mira Mesa 4--An error by Marauder shortstop Victor Baltrunas allowed two runs to score in the 10th inning. Scott Middaugh (5-1) was the winning pitcher for the top-ranked Patriots (1-0, 11-1). Mike Eicher hit a two-run homer for Mira Mesa (0-1, 8-4).

Serra 7, Morse 3--The Conquistadors (1-0, 7-8) scored four runs in the second inning to beat the Tigers (0-1, 8-7).

Madison 14, Point Loma 4--David Riddle pitched a complete game for the Warhawks (1-0, 10-3). Jimmy Dean had three RBIs, and Steve Eller hit a two-run homer to lead Madison’s attack.

PALOMAR LEAGUE Mount Carmel 6, Vista 5--Sundevil right fielder Danny Rumsey hit a grand slam and a solo homer to drive in five of his team’s runs. Matt Sprint hit a pair of homers for Vista (2-2, 8-5), good for four RBIs. Dave Schiesser won for the fifth time in six decisions for Mount Carmel (2-1, 9-6).

Orange Glen 5, San Dieguito 4--Two throwing errors in the seventh inning enabled the Cougars to beat the Mustangs (0-4, 2-12) at Escondido.

AVOCADO LEAGUE San Pasqual 10, San Marcos 0--The Golden Eagles’ Jeff Adams tossed a one-hit shutout against the Knights (3-1, 10-4).

Ramona 7, El Camino 0 (forfeit)--The Wildcats were leading the Bulldogs, 8-2, in the top of the fifth when El Camino Coach Doc Balderrama was ejected for arguing a ball-strike call. And because the Wildcats had no assistant coach or adult to take over the team, Ramona (1-2, 5-7) won via a forfeit. Ernie Spears had two homers, a double and four RBIs for the Wildcats. Those statistics will count, despite the forfeit.

METRO-SOUTH BAY LEAGUE Chula Vista 6, Mar Vista 3--The Spartans (3-0-1, 6-8-1) remained in first place in league. Bobby Bleisch and Brian Murphy had two hits apiece for Chula Vista, and Victor Ocegueda (3-1) was the winning pitcher.

Castle Park 11, Southwest 8--The Trojans (2-2, 6-8-1) jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and held on at Southwest. Jess Palacio and Jose Palo had two RBIs apiece for Castle Park, and Charley Schoneboom scored three runs.

NONLEAGUE Poway 13, Carlsbad 1--The Titans scored six runs in the seven innings en route to an easy win at home. The Lancers fall to 3-9-1.
