Hagler Objects, So Judge Is Replaced for Hearns Bout

Middleweight champion Marvin Hagler, who has a history of disputes with fight judges in Las Vegas, has succeeded in removing a judge assigned to Monday night’s title bout with Thomas Hearns.

At the request of Hagler’s trainers, Goody and Pat Petronelli, the Nevada State Athletic Commission agreed to replace judge Rudy Ortega, Chairman Sig Rogisch said.

Named to replace Ortega was Dick Young of Los Angeles.

“Ortega is more qualified as a good referee,” Pat Petronelli said. “But he doesn’t have that much experience judging fights. It has nothing to do with dishonesty.”

In two previous fights at Las Vegas, Hagler was believed to be the victim of some questionable judging.

In his first shot at the title in 1979, most ringside observers thought he had beaten defending champion Vito Antuofermo. However, the bout was ruled a draw, enabling Antuofermo to retain his title.

Against Roberto Duran in November 1983, Hagler appeared to be well ahead, but the judges had him behind through 13 rounds. Hagler then had to take the last two rounds to retain his title.

New York Islanders Coach Al Arbour was fined $7,500 and the club another $7,500 for actions in Thursday night’s 2-1 double-overtime Stanley Cup playoff loss to Washington, the National Hockey League announced.

Arbour was fined after being assessed a game misconduct penalty following the game. The other fine was levied because of the conduct of Arbour and other Islanders following the game, “including making public statements relating to the integrity of the officials and the league.”

The furor erupted after the Capitals’ Mike Gartner scored the winning goal at 1:23 of the second overtime.

The Islanders said that the officials failed to call Gartner offsides and that the goal also should have been disallowed because Greg Adams interfered with goalie Kelly Hrudey as Gartner shot.

Referee Don Koharski was pinned against the boards by the Islanders, and Arbour reportedly shoved him.

Ohio State, led by Robert Playter and Noah Riskin, won the NCAA men’s gymnastics title at Lincoln, Neb.

Ohio State scored 285.35 points in winning its first-ever title. Nebraska was second with 284.55 and Penn State third with 283.05.

Playter scored a 9.9 on the horizontal bar and Riskin a 9.75 on the parallel bars.
