San Diego Roundup : Turnbull Is Top-Seeded in Virginia Slims

The $75,000 Virginia Slims of San Diego tennis tournament begins Saturday at the San Diego Hilton Beach and Tennis Resort. The tournament runs through April 28.

Wendy Turnbull is the top-seeded player. Among the other competitors is Andrea Jaeger, who was the third-ranked player on the women’s tour in 1982 and 1983.

Mark Gorski, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist, will lead the field in the first Bud Light La Jolla Grand Prix bicycle race at noon Sunday.

Olympic speed skater and cyclist Eric Heiden is also entered.

Super and pro stock car racing will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Cajon Speedway. Mark Norris of Lakeside won the super stock main event in last week’s season opener.

Formula six-litre hydroplane races will be taking place Saturday and Sunday on Mission Bay. Local competitors include Roger Cornwell of San Diego and Jim Squire of Lakeside.

Steve Garvey will donate the glove he used to set a major league record for consecutive errorless games by a first baseman at 11 a.m. Saturday at the San Diego Hall of Champions. Garvey’s 193-game errorless streak ended Monday night.

San Diego State’s football team will have an intrasquad scrimmage at 7:30 tonight at Vista High School.
