Two police “sniffer” dogs were used Saturday to identify visitors to the California Institution for Men at Chino who were seeking to smuggle contraband, authorities said.

In a surprise sweep, authorities arrested 18 people, 10 on felony charges involving weapons and drugs, Chino police reported. Sgt. Ed Cisneros said visitors were pulled out of line during the daylong operation.

Vehicles as well as individuals were searched by Chino police and prison personnel. Chino Officer Kathy Wueve and her dog, Munko, handled the investigation along with Redlands Officer Lloyd Van Bibber and his dog, Levi.
