Earlier in these playoffs, the Islanders became the only team to rebound from a 2-0 deficit to win a best-of-five series by overcoming the Washington Capitals.

Kelly Hrudey, playing in place Billy Smith, registered his first playoff victory.

Bossy’s goal was his 82nd in the playoffs, tying him with Richard, and gave the Islanders a 4-0 lead.

Denis Potvin put New York ahead, 3-0, 54 seconds into the second period from Bossy after Pat LaFontaine and Bryan Trottier scored in the first period.

Edmonton 8, Winnipeg 3--Wayne Gretzky had three goals and four assists as the Oiler overwhelmed the Jets at Winnipeg to wrap up their Smythe Division series with a four-game sweep.

The victory gave the defending Stanley Cup champions a 7-0 playoff record this season. The Oilers play the winner of the Chicago-Minnesota series for the Campbell Conference title.

Gretzky tied his own record for points in a playoff game, set April 17, 1983 at Calgary, when he had four goals and three assists. Two of Gretzky’s goals came in short-handed situations. The two short-handed goals tied a playoff mark set by Toronto’s Dave Keon in 1963 and Bryan Trottier of the New York Islanders in 1980 and Gretzky in 1983.
