Leach and Annacone Advance to Semifinals at Atlanta

Unseeded Mike Leach and Paul Annacone were upset winners, while the two top-seeded players, John McEnroe and Kevin Curren, advanced to the semifinals of the $375,000 WCT-Atlanta tournament Friday.
Leach defeated No. 3 seed Pat Cash, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, while Annacone edged No. 8 seed Brad Gilbert, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, in afternoon matches before McEnroe struggled to beat No. 6 Tim Mayotte, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and Curren defeated No. 5 Scott Davis, 6-2, 7-6, in night action at the Georgia Tech Coliseum.
Leach will face McEnroe and Curren plays Annacone in today’s semifinals.
At Orlando, Fla., unseeded Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria upset sixth-seeded Bonnie Gadusek, 6-1, 6-4, to earn a berth opposite Martina Navratilova in the final of the $200,000 Chrysler-Plymouth Tournament of Champions.
Navratilova, the top-seeded player, easily beat No. 3-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany, 6-2, 6-1, in Friday’s other semifinal.
At San Diego, Melissa Gurney, 15, upset Beth Herr, 6-3, 6-3, to move into today’s semifinals of a $75,000 Virginia Slims tournament.
Top-seeded Wendy Turnbull of Australia, the only seeded player left in the tournament at the San Diego Hilton Beach and Tennis Resort, defeated Betsy Nagelsen, 6-4, 6-3, in the final quarterfinal match. The other two quarterfinal matches were Thursday.
In today’s semifinals, Gurney will meet Annabel Croft of England and Mary Lou Piatek will face Turnbull.
