The Controversy Over Teaching ‘Family Subjects’ in School

Share

In response to the editorial “Lessons That Preteens Need,” (April 21) parents and residents in the Capistrano Unified School District have just cause for the opposition to implementation of a new “revised” Family Life Education Program. I see it as usurping our God-given role as educators to our children in teaching subjects dealing with values.

Schools cannot assume the role of parents, but can hold parent education classes to help them learn about their children and how they can teach them “family subjects” with their moral input.

If the program is enacted in its present form, filled with political and subjective biases, and a line of humanistic and socialistic philosophy, the district could violate several penal codes and Education Code sections.

Preteens need knowledgeable and self-confident parents who can communicate and set examples for their children--schools can help them do so.
