Barber Chips In on 18, Moves Team Into Tie

Miller Barber chipped in at the 18th hole for a birdie Saturday to move him and partner Bob Goalby into a share of the lead at 193 with Billy Casper-Gay Brewer and Don January-Gene Littler with one round to play in the $500,000 Legends of Golf tournament at Austin, Tex.

Barber and Goalby, who has been troubled by headaches for two weeks, shot a six-under 64, while Casper-Brewer had a 66 and January-Littler a 63.

Casper and Brewer are trying to become the first players to defend their title in this best-ball tournament and have either led or been tied for the top spot for five rounds dating back to the third round of last year’s event.

Tied for fourth place at 195, 15-under, were the teams of Sam Snead-Lee Elder and Art Wall-Doug Sanders.

Kathy Whitworth and Mickey Wright, the first women to compete against men in a PGA event, shot a 69 to finish three rounds at four-under 206.

Raymond Floyd and Keith Fergus shot three-under-par 69s to pull into a three-way tie for first place with Payne Stewart at eight-under-par 208 after three rounds in the Houston Open.

Following the leaders are a group of six at 209--Phil Blackmar, Ralph Landrum, Gary Koch, Russ Cochran, Bobby Wadkins and David Frost. John Mahaffey, Calvin Peete and Chip Beck are at 210.

Masters champion Bernhard Langer, trying to win three consecutive tournaments, finished the day at three-over-par 75 for an even-par 216 total.

Stewart, who shot a 66 to lead after the first day and then fell back with a 70, climbed back to the top with birdies on No. 6 and No. 13. He went nine-under on No. 14 but bogeyed No. 16.

Judy Clark, who started the day with a seven-stroke lead, struggled to a 75 but managed to cling to a one-shot advantage over Colleen Walker after three rounds of the $175,000 S&H; tournament at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Clark, whose 36-hole total of 15-under-par 129 set a tour record Friday, finished with a 54-hole score of 12-under-par 204. Walker, seeking her first professional victory, shot a career-low 66.

Alice Miller, LPGA leading money winner, had a 67 and is at 206.

Mindy Moore is in fourth place at 207, followed by Cindy Hill, Deedee Lasker and Kay Kennedy at 209. JoAnne Carner and Hollis Stacy, both two-time S&H; winners, were among a group at 210.
