Fullerton : Fullerton Starts Planning for 100th Birthday Party

In 1887, Edward and George Amerige bought 430 acres of land and founded the city of Fullerton. Today, residents of the city, which has grown to 22 square miles and a population that tops 100,000, are beginning to prepare for Fullerton’s 100th birthday.

Although the celebration is two years away, preparations already have begun. City Council members recently approved filing an application with the Rose Parade for a Fullerton Centennial float. The city needs to file its application by the parade’s June deadline, said Sylvia Palmer Mudrick, Fullerton’s public information coordinator. If the application is selected, the cost of the float could range from $75,000 to $150,000.

The city also plans different activities every month through 1987, said Brad Hobson, Fullerton’s redevelopment assistant. City Council members plan to appoint a committee to oversee the projects, which will culminate in the 100th birthday on May 17, 1987.

City officials hope the monthly activities will spark the enthusiasm of residents, who will be asked to participate in fund-raising efforts for centennial activities.
