College Baseball : Cal State Fullerton Beats Irvine in a Wild Game, 14-12

Cal State Fullerton scored six times in the bottom of the third inning Friday night and then held on to beat UC Irvine, 14-12, in a wild Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. South Division game on Titan Field.

First-place Fullerton (17-8 in conference and 32-28-1 overall) scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead, but Irvine (8-14, 21-28-1), which has lost seven straight, got five in the top of the third for a 5-4 advantage.

Then the Titans got six in the third to take the lead for good. Jose Mota had the key hit of the inning, a bases-loaded triple.

Mota led the Fullerton offense with four RBIs. John Fishel had two hits, including his 14th home run, and two RBIs and Jef Garcia had three hits.

Irvine was led by Don Davis, who had four hits and two RBIs, and Brady Anderson, who had three RBIs.

Mike Harkey (2-4) got the win in relief and Doug Robertson pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to earn his second save. Doug Linton (5-7) took the loss.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. action:

UC Riverside 6, Chapman 5--The Highlanders, down 5-0 after two and a half innings, came back to beat the Panthers at Riverside.

Riverside (9-15 in conference and 25-22 overall) scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to win. Joe Koh’s single tied the score at 5-5 and when Chapman right fielder Dan Skarshaugh misplayed the ball, another run came in to give the Highlanders a 6-5 lead.

Chapman (6-19) got two runners on with one out in the top of the ninth but couldn’t score.

The Panther offense was led by Dan Grijalva, who hit a three-run home run. Mark Young and John DeForge homered for Riverside.

Ron Moore pitched a complete game to get the win and improve his record to 6-4. Rob Glisson (3-8) went 7 innings and took the loss.
