College Baseball : Aztecs’ Pleasant Hawaiian Vacation Is Spoiled by Loss

The University of Hawaii scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 11th inning to beat San Diego State, 3-2, in a Western Athletic Conference game at Honolulu late Friday night.

Aztec shortstop Steve Hill bobbled Dan Nyssen’s grounder to start the 11th. Nyssen moved to second on a ground out by Kelsey Esai. Designated hitter Paul List singled home Nyssen for the winning run.

Bruce Walton (8-6) was the winner for the Rainbows. Tim Arnsberg (5-5) took the loss. The Aztecs are 6-13 in the WAC and 42-27-1 overall. Hawaii is 12-9 and 47-29.

In other action:

Loyola Marymount 10-4, University of San Diego 0-4--The Toreros have lost 14 of their last 15 games. In the opening game, Steve Polk (4-1) shut out USD on four hits. Billy Bean had two doubles, a single and four RBIs for the Lions. Damien Bonenfort also had three hits and drove in a run.

Tom Sizer (3-9) was the loser and pitched a complete game, despite allowing 14 hits.

The nightcap saw the Lions score three runs in the eighth to wipe out a 2-1 deficit. Reggie Lambert’s run-scoring single against USD starter Mike David (1-2) tied the game at 2-2. Reliever Mark Hawblitzel gave up RBI hits to Polk (playing first base) and Chris Donnels.

USD’s David Jacas hit a solo home run in the sixth. Loyola’s Jim McAnany had a homer in the top of the seventh.

Gus Hein (8-4) was the winner for the Lions.

The two losses give the Toreros a 4-17 and 15-37-1 record.

UC San Diego 8-1, Grand Canyon 3-4--At Olsen Field, the Tritons handed Grand Canyon’s Randy McCamment (14-1) his first loss of the year in the opener. McCamment has beaten such teams as Brigham Young, Arizona and Arizona State.

UCSD scored six runs in the fourth, two of which were brought in on a double by Jack Meechaum. Teammate Dan DiMascio had two hits and two RBIs.

Frank Califano (3-0) was the winning pitcher. Califano worked 4 innings before he was hit on the left wrist with a line drive and had to leave the game. Mark Sloan finished up to earn the save.

UCSD (24-26-1) wasted a fine pitching effort by David de Cordova (6-6) in the second game. De Cordova allowed just four hits--two of them bunts--but three Triton errors let in three unearned runs. Jason Glover (6-3) struck out eight and was the winner for Grand Canyon (44-22).
