Herschel Walker ran impressively, but he was eclipsed by a reserve tight end.

Norris Brown returned a kickoff 82 yards for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter Sunday, and the Jacksonville Bulls upset the New Jersey Generals, 30-20, at Jacksonville, Fla., before 60,100 fans--the largest USFL crowd of the season.

“I just popped the opening, and all I had was field in front of me,” Brown said. “I couldn’t believe there was all that ground out there with nobody in front of me. I was so wide open, I thought I was going to pull a muscle or something.”

Brown’s touchdown put the Bulls (6-5) ahead, 23-20, just after Maurice Carthon had given the Generals (7-4) the lead on a 10-yard run.

Walker gained 169 yards on 29 carries, the fifth straight game in which he has gone over 100, and Doug Flutie completed 7 of 19 passes for 148 yards for the Generals.

The Bulls’ Heisman Trophy winner, Mike Rozier, scored twice, rushed for 87 yards on 22 carries and caught three passes for 41 more yards.

Jacksonville quarterback Ed Luther, who has directed the Bulls to a 5-3 record since signing on March 4, was 20 for 31 for 200 yards.

Oakland 21, Orlando 7--Fred Besana replaced shaken-up Bobby Hebert at the start of the second quarter and threw three touchdown passes to lead the Invaders past the Renegades as 21,085 watched at Orlando, Fla.

Besana, who lost his starting job to Hebert when the Invaders (7-3-1) merged with the Michigan Panthers this year, completed 15 of 19 passes for 193 yards against the Renegades (2-9), who have the league’s worst defense.

Baltimore 24, Arizona 19--Kelvin Bryant ran 15 yards for a touchdown with 4:44 left to lift the Stars past the Outlaws before a crowd of 14,432 at College Park, Md.

Denver 35, San Antonio 9--Ralph Gagliano threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Gold routed the Gunslingers before 9,753 fans at San Antonio.
