College Baseball : Slaught Helps USD Nip UC Irvine, 7-6

John Slaught scored from third base on Paul Van Stone’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the University of San Diego a 7-6 victory over UC Irvine in a nonconference college baseball game Tuesday at USD.

Slaught, who also had a triple and a single, opened the eighth inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice by Dan Echeveste. In the top of the ninth, Slaught saved the victory by throwing out Doug Irvine at the plate on a single to right field by Mike Sugar.

Robbie Rogers had two hits to help Mark Hawblitzel (3-3) pick up the win in relief. USD improved to 16-37-1, and UC Irvine fell to 22-30.

USIU 8, Cal State Fullerton 7--The Titans blew a 7-5 lead by allowing the Gulls to score three runs in the top of the ninth in the loss at Fullerton. Steve Hendricks singled with the bases loaded for the first run, then Titan reliever Doug Robertson threw wild pitches to enable the tying and winning runs to score.

The loss drops Fullerton to 33-30-1. USIU is 20-27. Roger Zottneck had 3 hits, 2 runs and 1 RBI for the Titans.
