Schoolyard Becomes Barnyard : City Children Sample Farm Life for a Day
Horses, cows, goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits and chickens all camped at Margaret Duff Elementary School in Rosemead for a day to illustrate a schoolwide project designed to teach about farm life. Farm Day was directed by teacher Vicky Rueda and included demonstrations of bread baking, the making of corn husk dolls, quilting and animal care.
Each class offered a different presentation based on its chosen project; there were charts, stories, plays, songs, square dances, puppets a peanut farm and seed mural. Other agricultural concepts were taught by students churning cream to make butter, displays of garden produce and explanations of how chicken eggs are hatched.
Animals were supplied by the California Farm Bureau Federation and local 4-H clubs. One exhibit compared farming practices in the United States with practices in Asia and Mexico, which are the homelands of many of Rosemead’s large immigrant population.
