A pickup truck plunged 150 feet down a cliff off the Ortega Highway, killing the driver and injuring the passenger, both Camp Pendleton Marines, authorities said Wednesday.

The 20-year-old driver, Timothy Douglas Osborne, died at the scene, about 13 miles east of Interstate 5 in the outer reaches of Orange County, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said. An autopsy Wednesday showed that Osborne died of a fractured skull and head trauma, a spokeswoman for the county coroner’s office said.

Michael G. Sanderson, 22, was taken to Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo. Sanderson suffered a broken left ankle and was in serious but stable condition, a hospital spokesman said.

The CHP said the accident occurred about 11 p.m. Tuesday when the driver apparently lost control of the truck.

Sanderson told officers he could not provide any information because he was sleeping when the truck careened down the cliff.
