It is unusual to catch a great white shark at any time in the California coastal waters. So it was surprising that two great whites were brought in on successive days this week.

Both sharks, mature males, measuring approximately 13 1/2 feet and weighing 2,000 pounds, were caught in drift gill nets Wednesday and Thursday, both in an area about eight miles northwest of Catalina Island.

The first was brought in by the Anna Maria out of San Pedro. The second shark was caught by skipper Wayne Southern on the Miss Alison out of Queen’s Wharf in Long Beach.

“The number of great whites caught in a year is very small,” said Dennis Bedford, a marine biologist for the Department of Fish and Game. “It was only three or four last year.”

Bedford said that both the DFG and the Los Angeles County Museum are interested in obtaining the great whites, but the catch is the property of each fishermen.
