Area Roundup : Briggs, Case to Defend Adoption Guild Title

The Adoption Guild of Southern Orange County will be holding its 24th annual tennis tournament during the weekends of May 25-27 and June 1-2.

Mike Briggs, a sophomore at Corona del Mar High School, and Ross Case, tennis pro at Big Canyon Country Club at Newport Beach, will be defending their title in the men’s open division.

Elimination matches will be held the first weekend at five sites: the Balboa Bay Club, John Wayne Tennis Club, Newport Beach Tennis Club, Racquet Club of Irvine and Palisades Tennis Club. The finals will be held at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Entries are being accepted for the Third Annual Vince Ferragamo Special Olympics Celebrity Golf Tournament, to be held June 4, at the Los Coyotes Country Club at Buena Park.

More than 40 sports celebrities, including Jack Youngblood, Bill Bain, Bob Brudzinski, John Cappalletti, Carl Ekern, Dick Bass, Sandy Hawley, Jeff Kemp, Carlos Palamino, Jerry Quarry, Rich Saul, Jackie Slater, Doug Smith, Jim Youngblood and the Rams’ cheerleaders, will be on hand.

Applications are being accepted for the Fountain Valley Recreation Department’s Summer five-man basketball leagues. Team rosters and fees ($200 per team) will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Recreation Dept., 10200 Slater Ave., through June 7.

All games, beginning on June 25, will be played at the Recreation Center, 16400 Brookhurst. Rosters are limited to 12 players, all 18 or over. For more information, call 963-8321, ext. 256.

Irish Freddie Roach, holder of the New England featherweight title, has been signed to box San Diego’s Martin Morado in a 10-round bout next Thursday night at the Irvine Marriott.

Roach, a Boston native, has a 36-7 record and recently lost a decision to former WBC featherweight champion Bobby Chacon. Morado is 27-5.

Several members of the Rams and Raiders, including star running backs Eric Dickerson and Marcus Allen, will meet in a basketball game at 8 tonight at Cal State Fullerton to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

In addition to Dickerson, the Ram roster will include Johnnie Johnson, Mike Lansford, LeRoy Irvin, Ivory Sully, Ron Brown, George Farmer, Otis Grant, James McDonald, Doug Smith, Jim Collins and Gary Jeter.

Allen will be joined on the Raiders’ team by Chris Bahr, Cliff Branch, Todd Christensen, Mike Davis, Lester Hayes, Mike Haynes, Derrick Jensen, Howie Long, Rod Martin, Van McElroy, Otis McKinney, Cle Montgomery and Dokie Williams.

Two-time Olympic gold medal hurdler Edwin Moses, of Laguna Hills, will serve as the 1985 L.A. Games Honorary Chairman. More than 8,000 athletes from Southern California are expected to participate in the Games, which will be held June 22-23 and 29-30. . . . A six-man team representing the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Assn, which will include UC Irvine’s Jon Pinckney, will tour England July 15-Aug. 25 to race against the British University Sailing Assn. The biennial event is alternately hosted in the United States and England by the two collegiate racing organizations. . . . Some of the finest Morey Boogie Bodyboard competitors will be in Oceanside on May 25 for the Ninth Annual Oceanside Bodyboard Championship and Jamboree. . . . Skiers in all age divisions will be taking part in the action, which will begin at 8 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. . . . The City of Newport Beach Parks, Beaches and Recreation Dept. is accepting registration for the 1985 Girls Yellow Ribbon Softball season. Girls entering the third through eighth grades are encouraged to register ($10 registration fee) at the department Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. . . . The Huntington Beach Freestyle Wrestling Club will sponsor a wrestling tournament from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Huntington Beach High School gym.
