An unidentified man, shot in the head early Friday, managed to crawl several blocks on to Interstate 15 near California 94 where he stood flagging down motorists, San Diego police said.

The victim was seen by northbound motorists shortly before 7 a.m., approximately 30 minutes after he was wounded by a bullet, which entered the back of his head and exited through his mouth, police said. He was shot near a house harboring illegal aliens, where he is suspected of having stayed, Officer Paul Thornton said.

An initial call from a motorist led police to believe that there was a sniper on the highway, and traffic was backed up for miles as police and CHP prepared to block off traffic.

The victim was transported to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. His condition was not known.

Police are seeking a suspect who they say fled from the shooting in a yellow Monte Carlo.
