The discovery of a live grenade in a locker forced the closure of Oakland International Airport for nearly two hours Friday while the explosive was removed by a bomb squad.

The grenade was “neutralized” at a bomb diversion area at a taxiway and taken to the police bomb squad’s storage locker, Sgt. Bill McFarlane said.

Police said that it is not known who put the grenade in the locker near the main terminal restaurant but that it did not appear to be connected to the United Airlines strike.

“An informant called the Oakland police,” McFarlane said. “We just waited until all the planes had left. The terminal was empty. (We) went in and snatched it. We called the Alameda County sheriff’s bomb squad, and they neutralized the situation.”
