Costa Mesa police officers Saturday shot and wounded a man they had chased on the 405 Freeway, a police spokesman said.

Costa Mesa Police Sgt. John White said an officer shot the unidentified man once on the left side near the intersection of Bristol Street and the 405 Freeway at about 7:30 p.m. after the man had left his car and tried to flee on foot.

The man, whom officers had pursued in a high-speed chase, was taken to Fountain Valley Community Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, White said.

“We are still trying to sketch exactly what happened,” he said.

White added that he did not know why the officers initially tried to stop the man or how far he had been chased before he was shot.
