An assessment district to help pay for a flood control project in the Lakeside area was approved Tuesday by San Diego County supervisors.

Fees paid by residents of the 12,000-acre district will finance about one-fourth of the $9.5-million project in the Los Coches Creek bed. The rest will be paid for by the county and the Army Corps of Engineers.

The 10,400 properties to be included in the district will be assessed an average of $29 each, according to Rudy Massman, director of the county’s Department of Public Works.

Once the project is completed, a moratorium on construction in and around the creek bed will be lifted. The moratorium was imposed by the board in the summer of 1980.
