Donors Step In to Help PTA Shortchanged on Fund-Raiser
A Manhattan Beach couple has donated $500 and a Gardena business is planning to contribute to a Lomita PTA that has not received the $8,000 profit it earned in a fund-raising drive for Eshelman Avenue Elementary School last November.
Both parties volunteered donations for the school after reading about its plight in The Times on May 16. The business that organized the school drive, Community Fundraisers Inc., has told PTA officials that it is in financial trouble and cannot pay the $8,000 it owes, PTA officials say.
The PTA had intended to use most of the money for instructional supplies.
The Manhattan Beach couple dropped off a check and did not want any recognition. The Gardena business, American Honda Motor Co. Inc., said it is still working out a program to assist the school.
“The nice thing about this is that it shows people care,” said Principal William E. Bennett. “It has made our PTA feel much better about the whole thing.”
Bennett said the $500 contribution will be used to establish a field trip fund for the school. “With $500, about eight classrooms could go on field trips next year,” he said.
