Well-wishers throughout Southern California had donated $2,251 by Wednesday to the family of 4-year-old Juan Alberto Muniz, who was hit by a delivery truck and killed Monday as his family scavenged for food in a Santa Ana market dumpster.

Santa Ana Police Officer Tony Zavala, who is spearheading a fund-raising drive for Raquel and Juan Muniz Sr. and their five remaining children, said extra donations of clothing and furnishings will be distributed to other needy families.

Thanks to the donations, Zavala said, he will take the family on a rare shopping trip today for new clothes to wear to the funeral. Services, which will be conducted in Spanish, are set for 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, 7845 E. Santiago Canyon Road, Orange, Zavala said.
