Dave Stewart was fined $500 Thursday by the Texas Rangers for remarks he made about fans after the relief pitcher was booed during Wednesday night’s game, the team said.

Although Stewart did not take the loss in the Kansas City Royals’ 6-3 victory, he gave up the winning home run to Jorge Orta in the eighth inning and was loudly booed. After the game he criticized the fans who booed him.

“I don’t care what criticism I get from just somebody who comes to the park to have a good time and drink a few beers,” Stewart said, “John the bread-maker or the gas station attendant.

“I’d say to those idiots, ‘Okay, partner, come on out and see how you can do.’ And he’d make excuses about not being in shape or something, but the bottom line is that he can’t do this job.”

Stewart is struggling with an 0-3 record and a 7.13 ERA this season.
