San Diego Roundup : Newman Is Grand Marshal of First Champions Parade
Ron Newman, Coach of the San Diego Sockers, will be the grand marshal of the Boulevard of Champions Parade today on El Cajon Blvd. The parade, which will feature the Major Indoor Soccer League champion Sockers, will run from 33rd to 39th Street.
This is the first year of the parade, which organizers hope will annually honor champions in San Diego. Other special guests will also include members of the San Diego Padres and Chargers, the U.S. Men’s Olympic volleyball team, some of the top equestrians in Southern California and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Band.
According to councilwoman Gloria McColl, the parade will also recognize scholars, community leaders, community organizations, businesses and more.
The 11th Annual Fallbrook Open Tennis Tournament starts Saturday and Sunday at the Fallbrook Tennis Club on Mission Road in Fallbrook and will conclude next weekend. The event will benefit the Fallbrook Boys and Girls’ clubs.
The popular Open Division, featuring men’s and women’s singles and doubles, will offer $3,400 in prize money. All A, B and C Division winners will receive commemorative plaques.
Young soccer players can sign up for the American Youth Soccer Organization at San Marcos High School Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Youngsters ages 5-18 are eligible.
The University of San Diego will offer a Summer Sports Camp program during June, July and August. Sessions are available in girls’ and boys’ basketball, girls’ softball, girls’ volleyball, football, competitive swimming, tennis and a special soccer camp featuring instruction by the San Diego Sockers.
