Meeting on Alan Wiggins’ Status Postponed

Share

Baseball’s Joint Review Counsel, which had been scheduled to meet Wednesday, will meet instead Monday to determine the medical status of Alan Wiggins, the San Diego Padres second baseman who has been undergoing rehabilitation for a drug problem since April.

If the counsel, made up of physicians Dr. Joel Solomon and Dr. Don Ottenberg and psychologist Dr. George DeLeon, rules in favor of Wiggins, he will probably play again this season, although the Padres have said he won’t play for them.

As alternatives, the Padres could trade him, release him or file a grievance.

If the counsel rules against Wiggins, he is likely to be through for the season. Sources say, however, that he will be declared medically fit.
