The City of Oakland agreed to pay the Hells Angels $75,000 to settle a lawsuit over a melee that broke out in 1978 when two police officers attempted to cite club members for drinking in public outside their headquarters. Forty more officers arrived and 26 Hells Angels were arrested. The group originally sought $2 million in general damages and unspecified punitive damages, alleged property damage, false arrest and emotional distress. Four officers were fired and four others were suspended without pay for damaging club property and lying to investigators.
