Defeat of Proposition 1

Share

The primary function of government is to provide the citizens with protection that, as individuals, they are unable to provide for themselves--military defense, police, fire, etc.

Virtually everyone, I’m sure, would agree with the proposition that police protection is a very important, if not the most important, function of local government.

Why, then, do our leaders ask us to ante up extra tax dollars for this protection, as they did in the recently defeated Proposition 1? Adequate police protection ought to be paid for off the top of our taxes. Other city services must come second, no matter what they are.

if we need more police, pay for them off the top. Then worry about beaches, parks, streets, low-income housing, a Triforium and harbors.

I’m disappointed in my elected leaders. They seem to have forgotten their basic civics lessons.
