Blutreich Continues to Toss His Weights Around in Illinois

Brian Blutreich led three UCLA-bound California natives in record-setting performances Saturday in the Keebler International Prep Track and Field Invitational.

Blutreich, of Capistrano Valley High School, hurled the discus 198-feet 4-inches--the 17th straight time he’s thrown more than 190 feet--to set a prep record for 190-plus throws.

Blutreich also won the shot put title with a heave of 69-3. He was only the second participant in the 14-year history of the meet to capture both events, which earned him the award for outstanding field event performer.

Blutreich had won the California state meet titles on June 1 in both the shot put (meet record 68-4) and discus (meet record 203-4).

Danny Everett, of Fairfax High, set a meet record of 45.76 seconds in the 400-meter dash, and was second in the 200 with a time of 20.97. His performance earned him the second-runner-up for outstanding track performer.

At the California state meet, Everett finished second in the 400 (46.37) and ninth in the 200 (22.49).

Brandon Richards, the third UCLA-bound athlete and son of Olympic pole vault legend Bob Richards, broke a five-year-old meet record by clearing 17-4 in the pole vault. Richards, of Santa Barbara, sought 18-2, but failed on three attempts.

Last week at the Golden West meet, Richards vaulted 18-0, just one inch short of the national record.

Doug Herron of Anchorage, Alas. captured the 800 meters in 1:49.75.

The only Illinois natives to capture honors were Andre Love, of Westchester, who added the Keebler long jump title to his Golden West title from last week with a leap of 24-1 1/2.

And Mark Deady, of Prairie View, Ill., outlasted a strong mile field with a time of 4:07.50.
